I'm Judy L Mohr. I'm an editor, a writing coach, and like you, I'm also a writer.
I have been writing fiction for over a decade now. I've been writing nonfiction for over two decades. Man, I feel old.
But when I started my writing journey, I started just like everyone else. I had an idea I thought would make a good book. I wrote it, then started seeking publication options.
Then I discovered what I didn’t know about the publishing industry—which was pretty much everything.
I had no idea how much hard work it would be to edit the opus I was writing, and I was completely delusional about what it would take to actually snag the interest of an agent. I investigated the self-publication road, only to discover I didn’t know anything about what made a good book cover or why books were formatted the way they were.
And the marketing. Oh, the dreaded marketing.
Website. Email sequences. Social media. Networking.
It was overwhelming, and all I wanted to do was write.
Isn’t that the dream of every writer? To be able to just write all day and not have to worry about all the rest that goes with it?
But I've never done things by half-measures. So, I started learning all I could about writing, editing, and publishing. I signed up for various writing courses and workshops. I read an insane number of craft books. I became active in my local writing community. And I retrained as a professional editor and built international networks.
As I learned more about this industry, I also discovered that I loved sharing my knowledge and experiences with others. I have made some mistakes along the way—big mistakes. But with every mistake comes another opportunity to learn more—and an opportunity to help others avoid the same mistakes I've made. The publishing industry is in a constant state of flux, and new technologies are coming on the scene every day. There is always more to learn. And if sharing my knowledge and experience can help just one writer get one step closer to achieving their own writing career goals, then I have achieved something magical.
Pay it forward.
This is the driving ethos behind everything that is Black Wolf. Share the knowledge and help other writers take their writing to the next level.
Ways I can help you with your writing
I believe that the focus of editing should be on the story and the reader experience. If that story is captivating and the characters are those we want to fall in love with, then punctuation and grammar become the little stuff.
Working with me, you will:
- learn how to take full advantage of show within your manuscripts, crafting story in deep POV;
- develop dialogue that is natural and a joy to read;
- tighten those plots and connect the beats of a story to the main character's journey;
- discover how you might build an online platform safely that is suited to your personality;
- gain the confidence to claim that title of writer, because that is what you are;
- and have a cheerleader in the corner who will be just as excited as you are when you take that next step in your writing journey.
There are many ways in which you can become part of the Black Wolf family. All you have to do is be willing to take that next step.

I hold a Certificate of Professional Editing and Proofreading from OpenColleges Australia (conferred April 2016), in addition to a PhD from the University of Canterbury (conferred December 2009). I also hold a Diploma in Small Business and Project Management from Te Wānanga O Aotearoa (conferred November 2022).
I am a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association, New Zealand Society of Authors, Sisters in Crime, and the Australian Crime Writers Association.
My personal writing possesses strong thriller roots, filled with adventure, dark monsters, and humor. Science fiction leaks in too, thanks to my background in astronomy and engineering. My book Hidden Traps focuses on how one can protect themselves on the internet, looking at internet security and the loopholes of using different social media sites. I am also a contributor to Putting the Science in Fiction, published by Writer's Digest in October 2018.
