As you go through your manuscript, looking at the various scenes and plots, be critical. Does that scene really add value to your story as a whole? During early drafts, this question might not be easy to answer, but here is a simple way to tell: if you were to remove the scene, how much of the other scenes need to be edited to accommodate the removed scene? If you’re only talking a sentence or two, then that scene was not needed.
